What makes lemos so useful?

🍋🍋🍋What makes lemons so useful?🍋🍋🍋

Lemons are a versatile, natural option for cleaning, beauty, cooking and much more. Not only do they smell and taste great, but they possess antibacterial properties making them perfect for killing germs. Their low pH makes them perfect for beauty and personal care, and when applied directly to skin, lemon juice can lighten age and sun spots. Lemons have a high concentration of citric acid, which is great for general disinfecting and cleaning. The citric acid in lemons can help kill bacteria and mold, and also remove soap scum and mineral deposits.

🍊25 Uses for Leftover Lemon Peels🍊

🍋1. Clean sinks and bathtubs
Sprinkle baking soda into a wet sink or bathtub, and use the cut side of a lemon to scrub these surfaces. This method will remove grime, act as a lemony “bleach,” and make sinks and bathtubs shine.

🍋2. Make dishes sparkle
Lemon not only acts as a degreaser, but the citric acid found in lemon also helps remove spots from dishes. Throw lemon rinds with the pulp into your dish water to help remove grease and make glasses and silverware sparkle.

🍋3. Remove grease or underarm stains on clothing
If you have half a lemon that has been squeezed, there will still be enough lemon juice in the remaining pulp to remove stains. Rub the half lemon on grease or underarm stains on garments. Allow it to sit overnight. For tough stains, sprinkle a bit of baking soda over the lemon-soaked stain and scrub, then wash as usual.

🍋4. Clean coffee pots
The acid in lemons works to dissolve hard water deposits and burnt coffee stains from your coffee pots. To a cool coffee pot, add lemon rinds, a few tablespoons of salt (as a mild abrasive), and a cup or two of ice. Swirl ingredients around in the coffee pot for several minutes, or until stains are completely removed. If stains are stubborn, leave the mixture in the coffee pot and soak for several hours or overnight. Rinse coffee pot well before using again.

🍋5. Clean soap scum and hard water stains on shower doors
Hard water stains are due to minerals in water, and soap scum is the result of the minerals in your water reacting with your soap. We already know from the coffee pot trick that lemon works great for removing this buildup. Take half a lemon rind with pulp intact, sprinkle salt inside it if desired, and rub directly on shower doors. Rinse well when finished.

🍋6. Make an all-purpose cleaner
This is one of the simplest ways to use your leftover lemon peels. Add the peels of several lemons to a large jar, and fill with white distilled vinegar. Allow the solution to “steep” in a cabinet for a few weeks. Strain out the peels, and use the vinegar solution as a great lemon-scented all-purpose cleaner…perfect for de-greasing, disinfecting, and leaving things smelling fresh. Add the citrus-infused vinegar to a spray bottle and use to clean countertops, sinks, toilets, spills, stovetops, or other surfaces.

🍋7. Refresh and sanitize cutting boards
Lemon does a nice job of eliminating odors that are trapped in your cutting boards (like garlic and onion!). It also sanitizes boards due to its antibacterial properties. Take half a squeezed lemon with pulp intact, and rub vigorously over a cutting board that has been sprinkled with a coarsely ground salt (like kosher salt). Rinse well and allow to dry.

🍋8. Remove odors from hands
If you have lingering odors on your hands from chopping things like garlic or onions, rub lemon rinds on your fingers, nails, and hands to leave them smelling fresh again.

🍋9. Deodorize garbage disposals
Smelly garbage disposals can be freshened up with leftover lemon rinds. (I’m always careful to put smaller chunks down the disposal so it doesn’t clog.) Simply drop rinds down the disposal with a few ice cubes and run the disposal.

🍋10. Clean your microwave and stovetop
Put one or two lemon halves, that have already been squeezed, into the microwave for about 15-20 seconds. Carefully remove the lemon halves and use them to clean the inside of the microwave, as well as the stovetop and the range hood. Rub lemon halves onto surfaces, then wipe clean with a wet dish cloth.

🍋11. Remove rust stains
The acid in lemons helps remove rust stains. This can be helpful in showers where shaving cream cans have left a rust ring, or sinks where iron pots have been left. Sprinkle salt on the rust stain and rub with half of a lemon that still has pulp inside. Allow the salt and lemon to sit for several hours, scrubbing periodically if needed. Allow the lemon to rest on the surface overnight if the stain has not yet disappeared, then rinse well with water.

🍋12. Whiten teeth
The acid content in citrus rinds can whiten and brighten dull or stained teeth. Rub the inner white part of the lemon peel on your teeth for a few minutes for a whitening effect. Rinse well with water after using the citrus peels. I love this remedy because you will notice almost immediate whitening effects! Note: Use this remedy very sparingly to avoid damage to tooth enamel or tooth sensitivity.

🍋13. Citrus Vinegar Hair Rinse
Vinegar makes a wonderful conditioning hair rinse, whether you’re using homemade no-poo, or just want shiny, healthy, pH balanced hair. The addition of lemon to your homemade conditioning rinse will help keep a greasy scalp and hair under control, while improving dull hair and resolving many scalp issues. Add the peels of several lemons to a jar, and fill almost to the top with apple cider vinegar (we use this kind). Allow it to sit for 1-2 weeks and strain out peels. Add about 1 tablespoon of this citrus vinegar solution to 1 cup of water, and use as a conditioning rinse after shampooing. Allow the rinse to remain on hair for a few minutes, then rinse out or just leave in.

🍋14. Lemon facials for toning and skin brightening
Lemon’s low pH makes it a perfect skin toner. You can rub the inside of a juiced lemon directly onto sun spots and age spots to lighten them. Just allow the juice to dry on skin, or rinse off after 15-20 minutes. Repeat every day. You can also use the inside of a juiced lemon as the first step in a luxurious skin-brightening facial. Rub the inside of the lemon all over your face, then apply a honey mask on top of that. Rinse off after 20-30 minutes.

🍋15. Smooth and soothe dry, scaly elbows
This is the perfect trick for softening elbows that are dry and scaly from winter weather. After juicing a lemon, take the two halves (with pulp intact) and sprinkle baking soda inside them. Stick elbow inside lemon half, twisting and turning the lemon on your elbow to exfoliate and soften. Optionally, you can then set lemon halves on a tabletop and rest elbows in them for several minutes before rinsing and drying your newly softened elbows.

🍋16. Make your own Vitamin C powder
Since the rinds of citrus fruits contains high levels of Vitamin C, you can make your own Vitamin C powder with lemon peels. Dry peels on parchment paper, in a 200° oven, or a dehydrator until completely dry. Grind into a powder using a spice grinder like this. Use this Vitamin C powder in your homemade Anti-Aging Facial Toner!

🍋17. Freeze lemon peels for recipes
You can freeze your rinds (or even whole lemons) and use them in recipes calling for lemon zest. You can also zest your fresh lemonsbefore using them, and store the lemon zest in the freezer. Store flat in a zip-top baggie so it’s easier to break off a chunk of frozen lemon zest. Allow to thaw before adding to recipes. Add small amounts to foods, smoothies, or desserts for a bold flavor.

🍋18. Dry lemon peels for recipes
Cut rind into strips and dry on parchment paper, in a 200° oven, or in a dehydrator. When completely dry, store in glass jars and label. Use in baked goods, tea, or other recipes.

🍋19. Candied lemon peels
Although I’ve never tried this one, they sound delicious. I see candied lemon peels on top of gourmet desserts in some of my favorite bakeries and cafes. Make your own using the instructions found here.

🍋20. Homemade lemon pepper
Lemon pepper chicken used to be one of my favorite dishes. But it required I buy a special bottle of lemon pepper to season with. Well, one thing I’ve learned in the wonderful world of DIY-ing is that you can make your own. Simply dry lemon peels on parchment paper, in a 200° oven, or in a dehydrator. Once dry, chop into smaller pieces and add to a grinder with whole peppercornsand coarse sea salt. You’ve just made a delicious seasoning for your next dinner!

🍋21. Burn lemon peels for fragrance
Toss your leftover fresh or dried lemon peels in your fireplace or wood burning stove to add a delicious lemony scent to a room. Dried peels will help ignite the wood around them because they contain oils that make them burn longer.

🍋22. Air freshener
If you don’t have a fireplace, you can simmer lemon peels on the stove top. In a medium sized pot, combine lemon peels with vanilla, cinnamon sticks, and water. Simmer over low, periodically adding more water when needed.

🍋23. Deter cats
Citrus is a known cat repellent. If you want to keep cats out of a garden or indoor plants, you can scatter your lemon peels around or mulch the surface of your soil with citrus peels. Keep cats off countertops or shelves by placing your lemon peels in small bowls on these surfaces. Spray your citrus/vinegar cleaner on rugs or around doorways of rooms you want your cats to stay out of.

🍋24. Deodorize garbage cans
If your garbage cans are starting to smell funky, you can put lemon peels in the bottom of the can underneath your garbage can liner. (Do not add lemon rinds with the pulp, or they will start to mold.) Replace every few weeks to keep garbage cans smelling fresh.

🍋25. Start seeds indoors
If you have lemons that were cut in half and juiced, you can use those lemon “cups” to start seeds indoors. Poke a few holes in the bottom of the lemon if desired (for drainage), fill the lemon halves with soil, and plant your tiny seeds in them. This entire lemon cup can be planted outdoors in the spring.

What is bloating and which foods help reduce it?

If your food does not digest well, bacteria in the small intestines produce gasses that can bloat you up like a balloon and make you feel extremely uncomfortable. Here are some easy to do remedies to fight the bloat and some foods that naturally help eliminate excess gas.

Bananas and potassium rich foods

Nuts - Unsalted almonds and pistachios

Asparagus

Mango

Do not chew gum or drink liquids quickly, as you take in a lot of air which also causes bloating

Do not talk while eating. You don't want to take in excess air.

If you tend to get bloated before and after your periods, take a 1000 - 1200mg calcium before and after for 2-3 days.

No aerated drinks.

Do not over eat or eat fast.

Low sodium diet. Chinese foods and packaged foods rich in sodium cause heavy bloating.( consume lemon water post a heavy meal if you couldn't resist it)

Consume low fat yogurt or a probiotic to ease the bloat.

Exercise. A 30 minute walk will make you feel better for sure.

Sip on peppermint tea or even better, fresh ginger tea.

Freshly squeezed lemon water with a dash of pure cinnamon powder

Foods like kidney beans ( rajma) channa/garbanzo beans, lima, pinto beans are usually avoided by people, because it makes them feel gassy.

These highly nutritious protein and fiber rich foods are great weight loss foods and it's true that they do cause gas, but you can eliminate the same by soaking it in warm water and then cold for 24 hours and cooking the beans with some spice, that negates the effect of gas formation ( hing, pepper, cumin, nutmeg, etc)

Which foods help burn fat?

Natural foods that turn your body into a natural fat burning machine:

Egg white
Beans: Black beans, kidney beans, broad beans. Include these in salads or in vegetable preparations or just boil them and eat them as a snack. You may feel a little gassy, but that’s just its natural digestion.

What does Cholesterol mean?

Yes Pharma companies have used this as a tool to promote from time to time, especially on preventive care medication.  Below message another case in point, possibly:

Cholesterol is finally officially removed from Naughty List

The US government has finally accepted that cholesterol is not a 'nutrient of concern', doing a U-turn on their warnings

In the meantime of 40 years US Drug Industry in connivance with Health Department made over 1.5 trillion US Dollars by selling cholestrol lowering drugs. This fear probably caused death of a million gulliable citizen who believe the US drug industry. (My comment)

By Nikki Barr

Cholesterol has been on the "naughty" list of nutrients for nearly 40 years, with health officials warning us to stay away from high-cholesterol foods since the 1970s to avoid heart disease and clogged arteries.

"Full-fat dairy products and advocados are high in good fats."

But US officials have finally given the green light for a U-turn on previous warnings, which means eggs, butter, full-fat dairy products, nuts, coconut oil and meat have now been classified as "safe" and have been officially removed from the "nutrients of concern" list.

The US Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for updating the guidelines every five years, stated in its findings for 2015: "Previously, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended that cholesterol intake be limited to no more than 300 mg/day.

"The 2015 DGAC will not bring forward this recommendation because available evidence shows no appreciable relationship between consumption of dietary cholesterol and serum (blood) cholesterol, consistent with the AHA/ACC (American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology) report.

"Cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption."

"Eggs are no longer on the 'naughty list'. "

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will, in response, no longer warn people against eating high-cholesterol foods and will instead focus on sugar as the main substance of dietary concern.

The 70s, 80s and 90s were the 'non fat' years, with the government warning people to limit the amount of high-cholersterol foods in their diets to avoid heart disease and strokes.

But nutritionists and scientists have long been campaigning for the U-turn, which started with introducing "good cholesterols" back into the 'safe zone'.

US cardiologist Dr Steven Nissen said: "It's the right decision. We got the dietary guidelines wrong. They've been wrong for decades."

He esitmated that about 20 per cent of cholesterol levels in your blood come from your diet, which means the rest is produced by your liver and is actually needed by the body.

Dr Chris Masterjohn added:“Since we cannot possibly eat enough cholesterol to use for our bodies’ daily functions, our bodies make their own.

"When we eat more foods rich in this compound, our bodies make less. If we deprive ourselves of foods high in cholesterol - such as eggs, butter, and liver - our body revs up its cholesterol synthesis."

"Nuts were previously thought to contain too much cholesterol."

Sugar has now been identified as the "worst" food culprit for health problems, with GPs now focusing on weaning patients off the sweet stuff.

Cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, who works with group Action On Sugar, says a clamp-down on the food industry is next.

He said: "It's very clear that added sugar has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever and, contrary to what the food industry want you to believe, the body doesn't require any carbohydrate for energy from added sugar.

"And we know the food industry have been spiking our food with added sugars. We also know that carbohydrates and particularly refined carbohydrates - so carbohydrates that lack fibre, sugar being one of them - have the biggest impact on insulin in terms of surges of insulin in our body. And insulin is a fat storing hormone." So, in summary, ditch your skinny latte for a full-fat latte and get some avocados down you.

MUST READ!!!👇👇👇

The Real Truth about Cholesterol

The majority of the cholesterol in you is produced by your liver. Your brain is primarily made up from cholesterol.  It is essential for nerve cells to function. Cholesterol is the basis for the creation of all the steroid hormones, including estrogen, testosterone, and corticosteroids.  High cholesterol in the body is a clear indication
which shows the liver of the individual is in good health.

Dr. George V. Mann M.D. associate director of the Framingham study for the  incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors states: "Saturated fats and cholesterol in the diet are not the cause of coronary heart disease. That myth is the greatest deception of the century, perhaps of any century"
Cholesterol is the biggest medical scam of all time.
There is no such thing as bad Cholesterol!  Men of science have abandoned truth for money. Attempting to control cholesterol is a very, very dangerous practice that occurs in every hospital and medical clinic daily.

"Statin Drugs Actually Increase Heart Disease"

So you can stop trying to change your Cholesterol level. Studies prove beyond a doubt, cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease and it won't stop a heart attack.  The majority of people that have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels.

THE GREAT CHOLESTEROL SCAM
By K.L. Carlson, MBA
Cholesterol guidelines have been created to increase pharmaceutical profits, not to improve peoples’ health.  I know from my experience as a pharmaceutical sales representative for a statin drug.  We were trained to emphasize to physicians the new lower LDL guidelines that were ostensibly created by health experts. The truth is the majority of the experts who created the lower guidelines have multiple financial ties to pharmaceutical companies.  One expert was found to have ties to ten drug firms

OUR BODY NEEDS 950 mg OF CHOLESTEROL FOR DAILY METABOLISM AND  THE LIVER IS THE MAIN PRODUCER.
ONLY 15% OF CHOLESTEROL IS BEING  DONATED BY THE FOOD WE EAT.  If the fat content is less in our food we eat, our liver
Got to work more to maintain the level at 950 mg.  If the cholesterol level is high in our body, it shows the liver is working perfect.  Experts say that there is nothing like LDL or HDL.
…………..
…..  Cholesterol is not found to create block any where in human body.  Why does it create block only in heart, where as calcium
 sediments create
Block all over the body .. for example kidney, pancreas. Urinary bladder, gall bladder etc etc..!

What do dreams mean?

Almost all of us dream, often multiple dreams every night. Do these dreams have any meanings, do they bear any significance are often questions that we ask ourselves or at times others, there are those who often vividly describe their dreams and there are those who do not remember dreams at all.
It was Freud and later Carl Jung who together used dreams for psychoanalysis. Freud believed that dreams are the royal road to the unconscious mind. He believed that every dream is a wish fulfilment, it’s like a secret wish which gets fulfilled in a dream. Let’s say I dreamt about losing my phone, if I had to look at it from Freudian analysis, it would mean that I wanted to lose a phone to get a new phone, lets image one dream of losing a spouse, I am sure you understand what the dream means. See it’s so simple.
Let’s take this a step ahead, a person may dream about an apple, while apple means good health it need not mean the same for this person, it’s important to understand the meaning that individual gives to apple. So while everything does have a symbolic meaning, the interpretation would largely depend on the individual’s perception of that particular thing. Also this would vary culturally; let’s say in India a snake is symbolic of religion, in Greek mythology symbolic of knowledge, while in western culture symbolic of sex. This is as far as the psychoanalytic perspective of dream goes.
For the psychotherapist a dream is nothing a random image which are the result of electrical activity in the brain. So for the psychotherapist so its important to understand not the images that you saw but the perception you had from it. So the lion in the dream may not be symbolic but the perception of what happened when u saw the lion, how did it make you feel - scared and what were your thoughts just prior to feeling this fear. These would represent the current underlying psychological processes to the psychotherapist.
Following these steps would help counsellor with dream analysis:
Dream Story: Write down as soon as possible to avoid forgetting the dream, also dreams that are really important would not be forgotten so could be written a little laterDream Images and Associations: It’s important to seek associations of dream images from real life understanding not from a book or from a symbolic understanding of the sameLink the associations: This is the process of fiting the jigsaw puzzule, and joining the dts to understand the real meaning of dreams for that individual.

What Dreams have to say
Listening to your subconscious often helps you solve problems before you run out of timeDreams are not corrupted and true but their meanings isn’t always what we think, a spouse may dream of their partner having an affair that does not mean that the spouse has an affair but goes to say the sense of betrayal a spouse has in relationship and how it needs to have a reality check.Dreams may often mean the opposite of what we see; say we dream of a sense of embarrassment out of singing in public, this would really go to mean that we have a desire to sing in public which is your hidden talent, of which you want to tell the world.Dreams of sexuality, for the body sex is just a biological process and therefore has nothing to do with love, it would only therefore signify a narcissistic need to reproduce, which may be the result of fears of abandonment or being ignored.Repetitive dreams mean that we are missing something important, its time to wake up and do something about it

How a psychotherapist helps:
For those going through nightmares persistently, a psychotherapist may often help you understand your fears provide gradual desensitization, use techniques like imagery rehearsal to create a new ending for the story, make you rehearse the same before going to bed, often help you perform relaxation techniques and exercises.

Dreams are the bridge from your conscious to the unconscious reality, we need to awaken to understand its meaning and ramifications, once having done this it would help us often sort our repressed unresolved conflicts. Here I have tried to give an understanding of dreams why and how’s of it, we could take up troublesome dreams and their meanings in the next issue.

What are the benefits of almond milk?

🍶ALMOND MILK 🍶

Making almond milk is actually an incredibly old process. We learned about it in culinary school as part of our training in classic French cuisine, but it was made and used long before the French transformed it into delicate blancmanges.

🍼The process essentially involves soaking almonds in water overnight or for up to two days — the longer you soak the almonds, the creamier the milk will be. Drain and rinse the beans from their soaking water and grind them with fresh water. The resulting liquid, drained from the almond meal, is almond milk.

🕊Real, fresh, very tasty almond milk. It's a world-changing thing.

🍶Homemade almond milk only lasts a few days in the fridge, so make just what you think you will drink in this time period. You could heat your almond milk on the stove to pasteurize it and extend the shelf-life, but this somewhat defeats the purpose of making it yourself. The process of grinding and straining the milk only takes a few minutes, so making smaller, more frequent batches doesn't feel too labor-intensive to me.🍼

Start with a ratio of 1 cup almonds to 2 cups water when making almond milk. This makes a milk that is roughly the consistency of 2% milk. If you'd like a thinner milk, use more water next time; for thicker milk, use less.🕊

I have made almond milk in both a blender and the food processor, and I've had good results with both. Overall, I like the milk made in the blender ever-so-slightly better: it has a silky texture and a subtly sweet flavor. Milk made in the food processor is a bit thicker and occasionally has some grit, and it has a more pronounced nutty flavor. Visually, you can't tell the difference at all! If you have both a blender and a food processor, try making almond milk in both to see which one you prefer.

11 Benefits of Almond Milk 🍼

Those looking for a dairy-free milk substitute have probably stumbled across almond milk and wondered, “Is almond milk good for you?” Whether you’re a vegan, sensitive to milk or just don’t like the taste, almond milk is a fabulous alternative.🍶

While almond milk is becoming more and more popular, it’s important to note that it doesn’t provide as much protein or calcium to be a complete substitute, so make sure you receive adequate amounts from other sources. One cup only has one gram of protein versus 8 grams in cow’s milk, and 2 milligrams of calcium versus 300 milligrams in cow’s milk.🐮

1. It helps with weight management.🍶

One cup of almond milk contains only 60 calories, as opposed to 146 calories in whole milk, 122 calories in 2 percent, 102 calories in 1 percent, and 86 calories in skim. It makes for a great substitute that will help you lose or maintain your current weight.

2. It keeps your heart healthy.🍶

There’s no cholesterol or saturated fat in almond milk. It’s also low in sodium and high in healthy fats (such as omega fatty acids, typically found in fish), which helps to prevent high blood pressure and heart disease.

3. It keeps your bones strong🍶
While it doesn’t offer as much calcium as cow’s milk, almond milk does offer 30 percent of the recommended daily amount, as well as 25 percent of the recommended amount of vitamin D, reducing your risk for arthritis and osteoporosis and improving your immune function. Plus, these two nutrients work together to provide healthy bones and teeth formation.

4. It keeps your skin glowing.🍶
Almond milk contains 50 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E, which contains antioxidant properties essential to your skin’s health, such as protecting it against sun damage.

5. It barely impacts your blood sugar.🍶
Almond milk (with no additives) is low in carbs, which means it won’t significantly increase your blood sugar levels, reducing your risk for diabetes. Because of its low glycemic index, your body will use the carbs as energy so the sugars aren’t stored as fat (score!).

6. It contributes to muscle strength and healing.🍶
Although almond milk only contains 1 gram of protein per serving, it contains plenty of B vitamins such as iron and riboflavin, both important for muscle growth and healing.

7. It keeps your digestion in check.🍶
Almond milk contains almost one gram of fiber per serving, which is important for healthy digestion.

8. It doesn’t contain lactose.

Lactose intolerance impacts about 25% of the US population, which means they have difficulty digesting the sugar in cow’s milk. This makes almond milk a suitable, lactose-free substitute.

9. It tastes better than cow’s milk.🍶
Almond milk doesn’t taste like cow’s milk, perfect for those who are turned off by the taste. It has its own unique flavor many describe as being light and crisp. Bonus: it’s versatile, meaning you can use it instead of cow’s milk in recipes that require it. It won’t have the same taste, but it will have the same consistency.

10. It doesn’t require refrigeration.🍶
Knowing that you don’t have to refrigerate almond milk means you’ll be more likely to take it with you to work, or on a camping trip. It’s perfectly fine at room temperature which makes it a convenient, nutritious staple to pack, automatically upping your daily intake of all the fabulous nutrients above.

11. It’s easy to make.🍶🐞
Being that it’s a tad inconvenient to have a cow grazing in your backyard, almond milk is the convenient alternative to make at home. It’s made by finely grinding almonds and placing them in a blender with water, then filtering the pulp with a strainer to separate it from the liquid. Want to give it a try? Here’s a delicious almond milk recipe.

Which are the 7 Natural ways to fall asleep?

🐝Tested 7 Natural Ways To Fall Asleep. Here's What ACTUALLY Worked🐝

For most of my life, I've had a hard time falling asleep. My mind seems to light up with random thoughts, worries, and stresses as soon as my head hits the pillow.
There was a phase when I relied heavily on reruns of The Office to drown out my noisy brain. But eventually I reached a stage when listening to the drama of Jim and Pam's relationship no longer cut it.
I turned to a few lifestyle changes like less caffeine, regular exercise, and a meditation practice (although irregular), which seemed to help.
Inevitably, there are still nights when despite how tired I am, I'm kept awake thinking about that email I forgot to send. I started to look for quick fixes for those times when I find myself wide awake at midnight, wishing for nothing more than to seamlessly drift off.
I tested seven natural tricks and methods designed to help me both fall asleep and get more restful sleep. But first, I laid some basic ground rules to make sure my sleep experiment wasn't altered by any big issues before testing out other natural methods.
🍄The basic rules:
• No caffeine after 12 p.m.
• Minimal (0-1 serving) alcohol
• Avoid screens an hour before bed
• Eliminate light entirely (I'm all about the sleep mask)
• Regular exercise (5-6 mornings per week)
🦄The sleep tricks:

1. Dab on lavender essential oil.
What I did: A dab of lavender essential oil on my wrists and temples.
The verdict: This felt really earth mothery, in the best kind of way. The smell was unexpectedly soothing. It might be a placebo effect, but it really helps me feel calmer and ready for sleep.
I actually integrated it into my bedtime routine, so now it's a signal to my brain that it's time to chill. But it's more of a de-stresser than a sleep aid.

2. Breathe through the left nostril.
What I did: This pranayama practice is simply about breathing through (you guessed it) your left nostril. I placed my thumb on the outside of my right nostril and pressed it closed. Then I just breathed deeply, counting to 26 breaths, as recommended.
The verdict: I felt a little silly, but it was good that I was focusing on my breathing and counting, which slowed my brain down. I lost track of my counting a few times and eventually drifted off. I guess that means it worked?

3. Try some yoga.
What I did: A series of five stretches when I got into bed, ending up in restful savasana.
The verdict: I found getting into the savasana mindset helpful in relaxing my body, but I would rather keep the yoga moves on the mat. This might be good for those who get in bed and fidget but I found it cumbersome to get into some of the recommended poses.

4. Meditate.
What I did: I tried a few meditations, some specifically intended for sleep, some not.
The verdict: It didn't matter what meditations I did, they all calmed me and cleared my mind enough so I could easily get to sleep.

5. Take a low dose of melatonin.
What I did: Took a small 0.5-mg melatonin (a hormone that regulates sleep/wake cycles) supplement one hour before bed.
The verdict: This was a winner. I've taken larger doses of melatonin before with mixed results. Every time I tried the small dose I got restful and effortless sleep without that knocked-out sleeping-pill feeling.
I wouldn't do this every night though, I think it's more of a way to get back on track if you have jet leg or a few bad nights in a row.

6. Do the 4-7-8 breathing exercise.
What I did: Lying in a comfortable position in bed, I followed this sequence about five or six times:
1. Breathe in for 4 seconds
2. Hold breath for 7 seconds
3. Slowly breathe out for 8 seconds
The verdict: This has been my favorite method so far and the one I find myself going back to. Focusing on this simple breathing method actually slows the heart down and calms the thoughts in my head. It works like magic almost every time.

7. Do a progressive muscle relaxation.
What I did: Focusing on each section of the body individually:
• Shoulders and arms
• Chest and abs
• Hips and butt
• Legs and feet
I would tense each of these areas (starting with the face, ending with the feet), then slowly release the tensed muscles until my entire body was completely relaxed.
The verdict: I felt like I was doing it wrong but was surprisingly relaxed (similar to savasana) and drifted off shortly after trying this out. This one probably won't become part of my routine, but it's worth a shot — especially if you're feeling tense.
Bonus: Use a white-noise app.
I've also started using a white noise app on my phone to play the sounds of a rainstorm all night. Having this to drown out external noises works wonders.
